EPIC AND ROMANCE IN THE TWELFTH CENTURY
I. This course will focus on the
dominant narrative forms of the time, which predate and lead up to the
modern
novel. Study of Christian epic, epic of revolt, courtly love,
Arthurian romance, Tristan and Isolt, beast-epic

historical reality (the mind-set of a feudal -aristocratic

toward women, etc.) and the workings of
literature itself, from the perspective of modern criticism.
Among the critical approaches employed: Freudian,
Jungian, Marxist, gender related, intertextuality.
