Fall 2009

Instructor: Dr. Velvet Yates

Announcements:

- Class meeting time is Wednesday, 8:00-10:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).

- Classes will meet in Elluminate.  A link will be emailed to students a few days prior to each class; you will use this link to access the weekly Elluminate session. (see Elluminate link at left for more information.)

- You must be enrolled in the UF Classics distance-learning graduate program to take this class.

Textbooks: none are required, but the following are recommended. We will be reading the fragments of the Satyricon as they appear in The Latin Library or in the Teubner text.

- TEXT:
1) Petronii Arbitri Cena Trimalchionis, ed. Martin S. Smith, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1975.
2) the more complete Teubner text: Petronii Arbitri Satyricon reliquiae, d. Konrad Mueller, Stutgardiae et Lipsiae, 1995.
ADDITIONAL HELP:
3) Petronius: a handbook, ed. J. Prag and I. Repath. Chichester, U.K.; Malden, MA: Wiley-Blackwell, 2009.
4) A companion to Petronius, E. Courtney, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2001.
5) Selections from the Satiricon; notes and vocabulary by G. Lawall. Chicago: Bolchazy-Carducci, 1981.
6) our own Gareth Schmeling (whose new commentary on Petronius, unfortunately, is a couple of years from press time): Petronius' Satyricon, New York: Monarch Press, 1971.

- There will also be secondary readings posted in e-reserves (stay tuned for more information).

Grading: Grades will be based on class participation, 1 translation exam, a short review of a secondary article presented to the class, and one short research paper (5-7 pages).  Attendance is necessary for the success of this class; please notify me if you anticipate a class absence. Article reviews will start in week 8. The translation exam will be timed, but taken outside of class in E-Learning during week 14. The paper will be due at the end of the semester; you have the option of sending me an outline or rough draft to review prior to submitting the final paper (weeks 12 and 14 would be good for this).

Grading percentages:
Exam 1: 25%

Article review: 20%

Short paper: 25%

Class participation: 30%
