LNW 6933 Survey of Latin LiteratureSpring 2006 |
Home Instructor: Dr. Velvet Yates Important announcements: - The first class meeting will be Thurs., Jan. 19, 8-10 p.m. (EST). 'Real-time' attendance is not required, but let me know if you still cannot get on WebCT by then. - Please make sure you are signed up for the right section. There seems to be a problem in that DOCE was registering people for section 2209! The correct sections are 2205 and 2203. Section 2205 ('on-campus') is for Florida residents; non-Florida residents should enroll in section 2203 (the 'web' section).
Course Description:
Textbooks (available fromOrange and Blue Textbooks, Gainesville): 1. History of Latin Literature, by GianBiagio Conte. 2. course pack of selections from Latin authors. Orange and Blue Textbooks phone number: (352) 377-4221 (ask for Arthur). Note: The publisher for the Conte book says it is 'indefinitely unavailable,' but Kate at Orange and Blue Textbooks is doing her utmost to acquire used copies from other sources for us.
Information on the course pack: I have included commentaries rather than the Latin texts in the course pack, since Latin texts are available online (at the Latin Library, for example). The commentaries include: Plautus, Menaechmi; Terence, Adelphoe; Juvenal, Satires 1, 3; Tacitus, Annales 1-4; Vergil, Eclogue 4, Georgics 4 (I think); Petronius, Cena Trimalchionis; Sallust, Bellum Catilinae. The material may be restricted due to copyright laws (and sheer volume), but we'll see how much we get. We will be reading more than just what's in the course pack, such as some Horace, Ovid, Cicero.
Grading: your grade will be based on three non-cumulative, on-line, timed translation exams. (See the Syllabus for further details.) There will be weekly vocabulary and parsing questions to work on, but these will be ungraded. The grade distribution will be 30% per exam, plus 10% for participation (which does not include mandatory attendance). There will be a weekly 'class' time, but students can post any time during the week.
Grading scale: 90-100 A 88-89 B+ 80-87 B 78-79 C+ 70-77 C 68-69 D+ 60-67 D 0-59 F
