• Course Description
• Geography as a social science {so-called human geography} focuses upon describing and explaining patterns of human creation in space. We seek to predict how those human patterns may appear in the future, at other locations, or under differing circumstances. In this course my goal is to introduce you to some of the substantive problems that are of interest to the human geographer. We will focus upon those general geographic patterns and theories that are expected to arise world-wide. The thrust of this course is to systematically progress through universal approaches to human/social geography, outlining some of the major theories in each, while emphasizing implications, and applications to current world problems.
• Most students at University of Florida have spent their lives in fairly large urban environments and it is this personal experience that this class builds upon: to explain the spatial organization of phenomena that the student is familiar with on an every day basis including housing, retail activities, manufacturing, and transportation. This class will also serve to explain and allow the student to subjectively predict their occurrence. This class will also deal with more abstract concepts such as how new ideas and other phenomena spread across time and space, everywhere in our world.
• The structure of the class places great emphasis upon the lecture. The text book is important as a tool to reinforce the subject matter.

Students may not access their PDA/Cell during exam. The numerical problems will be designed to allow calculations without electronic aid.

Term Paper
  The optional term paper is to be a minimum of 6,000 words and no more than 6,500 words. It is to be 12 pt. font, one inch margines, separate cover/title page. Charts and maps are good. The term paper must be typed and follow all the standard university rules on writing style, spelling, and layout. If you choose this option, you must interview a person responsible for making a decision of the kind covered in the topics of this course. The person interviewed must be resident in Alachua County, and the business or government operation must take place in Gainesville or surrounding Alachua County. The person interviewed must not be employed by University of Florida or do their primary work for University of Florida. The term paper will integrate the interview with the subject matter of this course. The term paper will not be returned; if you want to retain a copy, you may hand in a photocopy of the term paper along with the original and I will return one copy to you. You may submit the paper via email as a PDF or Microsoft Word file.
