Stephen Perz received his PhD in
sociology with a specialization in demography from the University of
Texas at Austin in 1997. Perz conducts research on demographic
processes and environmental change, land use practices and land cover
dynamics, and the socio-spatial processes of road-building in the
Amazon. He has received funding from NASA and NSF for work on roads and
forest fragmentation in the Brazilian Amazon. He is involved in
fieldwork along the Transamazon highway that crosses northern Brazil,
as well as along the Transoceanic highway that connects southern Brazil
to Peru and Bolivia. This work emphasizes interdisciplinary and
international collaboration and has resulted in roughly 30 publications
in numerous journals and books.
