The following assignments should get you started in creating web based teaching resources.Internet Assignment 1--Create a basic homepage (20 points)
For this assignment use Mozilla to create a web page. You will use your GatorLink as a home for your homepage. Go here for instructions on how to set up a webpage at plaza.ufl.edu. Roger's TESOL Page also has a section with helps for webpage creation. You might also want to work through the activities on There's No Place Like Home, a paper I presented at SE Regional TESOL in Miami in 2000, or Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks, a paper I presented at the 14th Annual Computers and Writing Conference, 28-31 May 1998.On this basic page
- introduce yourself
- give three or four interesting links.
Keep your page simple. When you are done email me the URL of your website so I can take a look: rthompso@english.ufl.edu
Internet Assignment 2--Make your homepage visually attractive and reader friendly (20 points)
Experiment a bit with the things you can do with your Mozilla editor. Add the following to your page.
- page properties (look under "format" in the toolbar). Experiment a bit.
- images (check the toolbar) Add backgrounds, animations, pictures. You can find resources on Tman's TESOL Page. You can also collect animations, pictures, and background as you surf the internet. Simply place your cursor on the background or graphic you want to copy and right click. Then follow instructions to save it to your computer. Experiment with how to place pictures, size them, arrange them with text.
- horizontal lines (check "insert" on the toolbar). Experiment at bit with changing the thickness, length, etc. (select your line with the cursor, right click, and try things out) (see also reader friendly homepages from Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks)
- tables (check the tool bar) Tables are used to keep things in the same order on everyone's computer. You can make hidden tables to do such things as keep things arranged in columns or to separate pictures and text. Experiment with the properties of table (select table and right click)
- targets (check "insert" on the tool bar) This helps people jump around your page, sort of an internal link. This allows you to put a table of contents at the top of your page so people can see what you have without scrolling down.
When you are done, email me the URL of your improved page and I'll check it out.
