astronomer...?
Walking through the National Gallery of Art in Dublin one day I noticed a small portrait.  I was immediately struck by the face, most particularly, a set of familiar eyes.  Nor could I ignore the title of the portrait and its usual battery of astronomical and scholarly icons.  A very suggestive piece of evidence was that the portrait was by an unknown Dutch artist, ca. 1650...

Good evidence suggests Boulliau indeed travelled to Amsterdam during the period specialists claim this painting was completed.  There is also collateral evidence Boulliau had an image made of himself about this time.  It is possible this painting represents Boulliau at about age 52.
