A Biographical Guide & Index to the Scientific Revolution
& the Republic of Letters, 1450-1750
Dr Robert A. Hatch - University of Florida

The following sources form the principal underpinnings of the Biographical Guide & Index to the Scientific Revolution & the Republic of Letters, 1450-1750.   As might be inferred from the following list, the bulk of the entries in the BIO-DIC derive from the scholarly monuments of the Scientific Revolution, from the great Opera omnia and Oeuvres complete, and from the published letters and correspondence of figures great and small.  Other sources include all major (and many simply available) biographical and bibliographical sources that relate to his period (national, regional, topical, etc.).  In addition, individual entries derive from any number of manuscript catalogues and a variety of unpublished sources, handlists, inventories, and calendars.  The chronological scope of the BIO-DIC spans three centuries and thus includes generations of individuals active both before Copernicus and after Newton.  Topically, although particular emphasis is placed on the 'New Science' {Read:  Natural Philosophy, perhaps 'science, technology & medicine'} inclusion criteria have been most generous.  The BIO-DIC covers all aspects of learning and all accessible elements of the Republic of Letters, not only the 'patrons and politicians' but 'mechanics and valets,' indeed, mistresses, lovers, housekeepers, and pets.  Having made its first transition from 4x6 cards to the cutting edge of DBIII in 1978, the BIO-DIC is currently managed in Visual D-Base 7.  The BIO-DIC continues to expand and is under contract for publication.
