 Large Parallax:   The first illustration above shows the earth at two positions (six months apart) in its annual orbit around the sun.  Compared to the illustration below, the top diagram shows the apparent position of a relatively near star with a relatively large parallax. 

 

 
 Small Parallax:   The second illustration shows the earth at the same two positions (six months apart) in its annual orbit around the sun.  Compared to the first illustration, the star being observed is further away and hence the parallax angle is smaller.
