SYG 2010 - Social Problems Throughout the course, I will ask you to write brief reviews of the assigned readings and class materials, organized by topic. I recommend you type them and keep a running file on your computer (backing it up regularly). We will rely upon these reviews in class discussions and they will inform your participation as well as your final project. Ideally, keeping this notebook will: provide you a place to respond to the readings, help you to identify the author’s main points and arguments, assist you in thinking about how the readings related to each other, and to help you take ownership of the class material.
Reading & Reflection Notebook Guidelines
The Notebooks will be collected 3 times over the semester; the first two times they are collected grades will be assigned as "check-plus" (rarely, for exceptionally outstanding work), "check" (satisfactory work), and "check-minus" (for work that needs improvement); a numerical grade will be assigned to the whole of the Notebook when it is submitted the third and final time. Late notebooks may not be accepted and will only be permitted in Emergency situations (such as illness requiring medical treatment or the death of a close family member); these will be handled on an individual basis, please contact me asap.
Requirements:
- When turning in your Notebook, make sure to follow the following instructions:
- Print and staple all of your pages together with your name, UFID #, "SYG2010", and the date in the top right corner of the first page. Do not turn in a folder or notebook.
- Number your pages in the top right corner with your last name, page number (for ex. Jones, 2).
- Start the review of each Topic on a new page.
The Topics are as follows:
- Your entries will be responses to the Topic in their entirety (not to each individual reading & chapter). You must write at least 4 pages (typed, double-spaced, 1-inch margins on all sides, 10-12point font) for each Topic. Again, you need not respond to each reading or chapter for a Topic (as that would result in at least 20 pages of writing in your notebook), but you should respond to most readings.
- As you become more skilled at these responses, I expect you to make connections between the various articles and across the various topics. I may also give you questions to think about in class that you should respond to in your notebooks. In addition, I also encourage you to write about current events and/or your own personal experiences as they relate to things we talk about in class. Be creative—clip things out of magazines or talk about tv or films you see.
- Note: Though it is not necessary to mention each and every reading in your Notebook, you are expected read all of the assigned materials each week, as we may discuss them during class. If I were doing this assignment, I would begin by making a few notes about each article and book chapter, as I read it, and then go back over these notes to compose the review for the entire Topic.
