  1. How does Israel’s “ethnic democracy” differ from a “liberal democracy” as practiced in the US? Can Israel really be considered a democracy?

  2. An Israeli expert once described Zionism as a family name rather than a single doctrine. Explain what this means.

  3. Resolved: Israel needs serious electoral reform. Write an essay in favor of or opposed to this resolution.

  4. The Zionist movement of the late 19th/early 20th century had an ambiguous and conflicted attitude toward the Jewish religion that became apparent when the state of Israel was created. Discuss how this ambivalence manifested itself.el


Advice on writing essays for Dr. Wald:

 

  1. Make sure and answer the question but it is the quality of your argument that carries the most weight.

  2. The best answers are those that combine material from lectures and readings.

  3. Explain your assumptions and define terms as you would for a non-specialist who was reading the essay.

  4. And try to write legibly!
