Momentarily we are working on the following projects:

The perception of lexical tones (with Ratree Wayland)

Languages such as Mandarin Chinese, Thai and Yoruba use differences in pitch and pitch contours to distinguish among lexical meaning. Drs. Wayland and Kaan are interested in determining:

  1. Whether listeners unfamiliar with tone languages can distinguish among Thai or Mandarin tones, both at an'attentional' lveel, as measured by disrimination tasks, at a 'pre-attentional' level measured by ERPs
  2. What the effect is of laboratory training on tone perception?
  3. Whether there are differences depending on language background (that is, speaking a tone language versus not speaking a tone language) and musical experience?

Sentence processing in first and second language(with Frank Wijnen, Utrecht University)

Processing sentences in your native language is different from processing sentences in a language you learned at a later age and are less proficient in. This project is aimed at identifying the factors underlying differences in native and second-language sentence processing, and their relation to factors such as proficiency, memory and cognitive control.
