The Ancient Greek World

Course Description:
A survey of ancient Greece from the Bronze Age (ca. 2000 B.C.) until the Roman conquest. Emphasis upon social and economic history, cultural contributions of ancient Greece. Text & some primary source reading (in English translation), use of archaeological evidence w/ slides and film. 3 credits. Satisfies Gen.Ed. Req.: H,I,S.

3) Aristophanes, (tr. Barrett), The Frogs & Other Plays (Penguin)
4) Greek Historians. ed., M.I. Finley
5) Dialogues of Plato, (Jowett tr.) (Wash.Sq.Press) + Handouts -- given out in class or online.

Note: Burn text should be read carefully; all others can be 'skimmed' (read quickly).

Attendance: is required. (Lec.,film, slide material on tests.) Sign Attendance sheet at each class meeting. Each unexcused absence = 1 pt. deducted from student's final course total.
Plagiarism/Cheating: will not be tolerated in any form, may cause lowered grade or failure.
Late, make-up work: permitted only w/written medical excuse, or prior permission..

Out-of-class assignments 1) Reading: see schedule below),
2) Map--student is to locate significant places on blank map wh/will be provided;
3) Short Papers: 2 @4 pgs.ea.,typed--10 or 12 point type font, double-spaced, 1-in left & right margins, +footnotes, Bibliography- based upon primary source readings (Finley, & Spyridakis collections or other approved primary source).
4) Greek alphabet assignment: - (Handout) Students are to learn the Greek alphabet & do simple Eng.-Greek/Gr.-Eng. transliterations (not translations) as aid in vocab., understanding.
5) Quizzes: Take-home quizzes (see schedule below) --may cover lectures, assigned reading, films, slides, handouts, & Greek alphabet.

Exam Study Guides will be distributed about 1 week before the midterm and the final exam. Midterm Exam: 1-hour, covers studies to date: part objective, incl. slide I.D.s; part essay
Final Exam: 2-hours: I hr =2nd midterm; 1 hr comprehensive of entire course material. part objective, incl. slide I.D.'s; part essay (.Poss. change; Essay, not an "outline" answer.)

Grading: Final Course grade:
A=100-90%; B+=89-87%; B=86-84%; B-=83-80%; C+=79-77%; C=76-74%; C-=83-80%;
etc.; 59% & below = F. I do not curve the course grades.

Quizzes = (4 @ 20 pts.ea.) 80 pts.
Map Assgn.= 20pts
Papers= 2 @ 50 pts. ea. 100 pts.
Greek alphabet assignment = 10pts
Midterm exam" 100pts
Final Exam= 200pts
Course total = 510 pts.

This course--a mix of lecture, reading -- (text & primary sources), slides & film--is designed to be enjoyable, interesting as well as informative. Due to use of the visual materials, regular class attendance & keeping up with assigned reading are important. I do not loan lecture notes or make up missed Slide presentations & films. No tape recording of lectures. Your own note taking is still best system. Rely on classmates for missed lec. notes. Class discussion (&/or questions during lecture/meetings) is encouraged.
