Course Description: A survey of ancient Rome. Emphasis upon economic and social history, cultural contributions of ancient Rome.
Text & some primary source reading (in English translation), use of archaeological evidence w/ slides and film. Satisfies Req.: H, I
Attendance: is required (Lecture, slide, map, & film information
included on exams). Be sure to sign attendance sheet at each class meeting.
Plagiarism/Cheating will not be tolerated! Take-home work discuss
ok, but do own work!
Late, make-up work: permitted only w/written medical or other
significant excuse.
Films, slides, Handouts, etc.--an integral part of the course; additional films, slides (not noted in syllabus) may be presented at times. These items may be on quizzes and exams.
Out-of-class assignments:
1) Reading (see Syllabus, p.2);
2) Map -- student is to locate significant places on blank map wh/will
be provided;
3) Quizzes-take-home format, covering lectures, film, slides, readings,
etc.
4) Short Papers--2. See Sy11.p.2 for due dates.)(3 pgs. text, each.
NO MORE!) + a Bibliography page -- listing works cited--(No encyclopedias
or dictionaries!).
Purpose -- student should demonstrate intelligent reading and
evaluation of content of primary sources) (=ancient authors) (in translation)
as tools for
enhancing knowledge of ancient history. A Paper Guidelines sheet will
be distributed prior to paper due date.
Format: 1) Notes. parenthetical &/or footnotes required; 2) paper must be typed. double spaced, 1-in left & right hand margins,10 pitch font.
Paper grading =75% = Content, Analysis, development of ideas;
Bibliography & Documentation--e.g., footnotes (not! end-notes); if
appropriate, you may use parenthetical (= end of-sentence) author &
pg # citation--e.g., (Smith 43). 25% = Mechanics (Spelling, Grammar, punctuation),
Style (appropriateness and clarity of expression).
Paper # 1 must be based upon an ancient Roman writer's work
treating a Roman topic before 27B.C.E., i.e., the Plutarch required book
(e.g., comparing two ''Lives") or w/ Dr. Turners approval--another Roman
writer's work, e.g., Livy, Cicero, Caesar, Sallust.
Paper # 2 must be based upon primary sources for a topic relevant
to the period after 27 B.C.E.,--esp. any sources from the Lewis required
book. With Dr. Tumer's approval, student may select a non-Lewis topic and
primary source readings.
Exams: Midterm and Final: (see schedule Syllabus p.2 for dates)
Exam Study-Guides will be distributed about 1 week before the
midterm and the final exam.
Midterm Exam: 1-hour, covers studies to date. part objective,
incl. incl. slide I.D.'s; part essay.
Final Exam: 2-hours: I hr =2nd midterm; 1 hr =comprehensive
of entire course material. part objective, incl. slide & map l.D.s;
part essay.
Grading: *Final Course grade:
A=100-90%; B+=89-87%; B=86-80%; C+=79-77%; C=76-70%; D+=69-67%; D=66-60%;
59% and below = 'E'. This is an upper division course & I do not curve the class.
*Class participation/Attendance--One point will be deducted for each non-approved absence.
