The Kanjincho (Subscription List) scene. Left to right: the border
lord, Benkei (who should be holding the blank scroll as he improvises the
list of those who have promised money to restore a temple, thus legitimizing
his pose as an authorized charity), and finally Yoshitsune, with the big
hat that hides his face. In principle Yoshitsune should also have some
cloak or poor clothing to hide his rich brocades, since he is posing as
a servant.

Two more images of Benkei: on the left, a kimekomi doll with a gosho-style
baby face (but not the white gosho skin), representing Benkei collecting
weapons on the bridge--his first meeting with the boy Yoshitsune. He wears
on his back the pack of weapons he has collected, and a twisted scarf on
his head. On the right is a charming little boy dressed as Benkei in the
Kanjincho scene.
This gosho-style doll (note that his clothing is minimal and his nakedness
shows through) suggests the boy Yoshitsune, Ushiwakamaru, with his sword
and the fan with which he clobbers Benkei when they meet on the bridge.
The hairdo suggests a young boy or girl at court, so it is part of the
elements contrasting with the heroic subject.
A magnificent antique ningyo presenting Yoshitsune
as a general with a kneeling bannerman can be seen on the J.A.D.E.
site; it was part of a 2001
Metropolitan Museum exhibition of dolls from the collection of Michael
Ayervais.
