BOT 6935 students: You will have some questions on the Final Exam that is related to the readings.
April 1 BOT 6935 students (Intermed Plant Phys) should go to www.nobel.se/chemistry/laureate/1961/press.html and also to www.nobel.se/chemistry/laureate/1978/press.html to read about the Nobel prizes of Melvin Calvin and Peter Mitchel. Also read Mel Calvin's Nobel lecture (Click on lecture - it is a pdf file). Be prepared to discuss the importance of their findings on April 1.
April 8. BOT 6935 students. Go to the e-journal locator in the UF library and find the journal Nature. Search Nature under "Reinfelder". You should find the following pdf files of a short article and some comments. It is clear there is some controversy regarding the first article. What is so controversial about it? What is so surprising about it? Be prepared to tell me - otherwise I will pick on you!
1. Reinfelder JR, Kraepiel AML, Morel FMM. 2000. Unicellular C-4 photosynthesis in a marine diatom"
NATURE 407 (6807): 996-999 OCT 26 2000.

NATURE 412 (6842): 41-41 JUL 5 2001April 15 BOT 6935 Students. Your tasks are
1. to find and hand in the references (not the whole paper) for the following organisms that have C4 photosynthesis but lack Kranz anatomy: a) a terrestrial plant b) two submersed monocots c) a macroalga.
2. Be prepared as a group to describe to the class how the organism assigned to your group manages to accomplish C4 photosynthesis without Kranz anatomy.Stress Physiology (not on exam).
