SYA 4930 Sociology of Economic LifeCourse BriefAs an economic sociology class, we look at the variety of ways in which markets and economic life are socially constructed and structured. We look at the construction of consumers/consumption, the importance of networks in the economy, like in job markets, the importance of social trust in the economy, and the literature on varieties of capitalism, among other topics. We will read a number of well-known pieces in the field of economic sociology. By the end of the semester, it is expected that you will have a good introduction to the topics, scope, and style of analysis of the field and will understand how markets shape social lives and how social actors may re-shape markets.
