nam mellitus erat suamque norat
ipsam tam bene quam puella matrem,
nec sese a gremio illius mouebat,
sed circumsiliens modo huc modo illuc
ad solam dominam usque pipiabat.

Salvete et bene ventum!

Welcome to Latin 1120: First semester Latin.

In this course you will:
1) Learn the grammar, syntax and morphology of Latin. In order for you to succeed you must complete the homework, participate in class and ask questions when you don’t understand something. Our textbook for grammar and vocabulary is Wheelock’s Latin Grammar. We will cover chapters 1-14 this semester.

2) In addition to the readings in Wheelock, we will read some easy passages from 38 Latin stories. The long-term goal for learning Latin is, of course, to enjoy the rich literature of ancient Rome. Expect that translation will play a large roll in the daily course-work and the examinations.

3) And, most importantly, communicate with your brothers and sisters from over 2000 years ago. This course won’t focus on culture and history—we have bigger fish to fry, but your fluency in the written language will allow you to reach across two millennia and understand the lives of people who live in a culture so alien and yet so familiar.

A few words:
Of course, doing your work and attending class are mandatory. Don’t expect a good grade if you habitually miss class, are not prepared, come in late etc. More than three unexcused absences will result in the lowering of your participation grade- 5% per day. I do not accept make-up work and late assignments will not be graded.

Don’t cheat.

You must respect your fellow students and me. Remember, everyone comes to this class with different abilities and at different levels. Some of you can absorb vocabulary like a sponge, others are grammar geniuses, still others may have had years of Latin in high school, but no matter what your gifts or flaws may be, you are welcome in this class and I expect that you will make others feel welcome too. Intolerance towards individuals or groups based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or background will not be tolerated! If you come to class prepared and ready to work we will have a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Molesti scelestique verberandi sunt et erunt!

Grades:

3 tests- 75% (W September 26, W October 31, W December 5)
class participation (includes quizzes et.al)- 25%

I am happy to accommodate special needs with the appropriate documentation. Please inform me by Sept 5th if you require different testing conditions etc.

Permission to reschedule an exam will only be given for dire situations (not for vacations) and a minimum of two-weeks notice.
