Senior Ashley Bittner, a history and political science double major, aspires to pursue a career in public service. She hopes to work on a legislative staff for U.S. Congress and possibly run for political office herself one day. As one of 75 students nationally selected as a 2006 Harry S. Truman Scholar, Bittner is well on her way to making this dream a reality.

Established in honor of the 33rd president of the United States, the Harry S. Truman Foundation has been awarding scholarships to outstanding college juniors planning to pursue careers in public service since 1977. Bittner has been awarded $30,000 to attend the graduate school of her choice. Upon receiving her bachelor’s degree in May 2007, she plans to pursue her interests in sustainable development, international relations and environmental policy—entering graduate study to attain either a Ph.D. or a combined master’s in public affairs and a law degree.

President of the Honors Ambassadors, Bittner has been active in the First-Year Florida course for UF freshmen, served as a site leader for the Florida Alternative Breaks program in Costa Rica and volunteered in the Gainesville community through the Center for Leadership and Service. Bittner completed an internship with U.S. Senator Bill Nelson’s office in Washington, D.C. in 2005 and spent the summer of 2006 studying modern British history at the University of Cambridge in England.

In addition to her Truman award, Bittner has been recognized as a J. Wayne Reitz Scholar, a Wentworth Scholar and a McLaughlin Scholar. She is also a member of the University Scholars Program, which pairs UF undergraduates with faculty mentors for research collaboration, and she is conducting study this year on globalization in the West Indies with Assistant Professor of History Jessica Harland-Jacobs.
