Josh Gellers is a senior majoring in political science and minoring in geography. As a University Scholar, he is working with Geography Professor Peter Waylen on a research project aimed at better understanding the scope of international disaster mitigation and how capable non-governmental organizations are at handling disaster relief coordination.

“I hope to take my current knowledge of disaster relief efforts and El Niño and fuse the two in order to discover how the ravaging climatological phenomenon is managed on a state level,” he says.

Gellers, who grew up in Plantation, Florida, has received the Scarborough Scholarship, two Hazen E. Nutter Scholarships, W.W. Massey Sr. Presidential Scholarship and the D.C. Gator Club Scholarship. He is an Anderson Scholar of highest distinction, has been inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key International, Pi Sigma Alpha and Gamma Theta Upsilon honor societies, and will be graduating with high honors.

During the 2004-2005 academic year, Gellers served as vice president of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Student Council (CLASSC). He is the current editor-in-chief of "UF International Review" and associate justice of the Honor Court. He recently was awarded Best Undergraduate Presentation at the 2005 annual meeting of the Florida Society of Geographers.

When he is not busy with academics, Gellers enjoys volunteering with handicapped children at area high schools and competing in intramural sports.
