Foreign TV and movies in Gainesville

TV

  1. The Language Learning Center has copies of several vintage language telecourses and other older materials for study, plus satellite TV in several languages.
  2. Cox Cable in Gainesville includes Univision, a Spanish-language channel with news, talk shows, soaps etc. on channel 40 as part of their standard service package. Some of the digital channels (Sundance, IFC) often show subtitled foreign films, too. They also offer a "paquete latino" with many channels of sports, news, and entertainment in Spanish.
  3. WLUF TV Listings Cox Cable, Channel 6. WLUF usually carries several of the best language telecourses, such as French in Action, Destinos (Spanish), Connect with English, and Fokus Deutsch.. You can use the search function to find out which episodes are currently being shown, and the times and dates.

Movies

The Language Learning Center has some foreign-language theatrical films, including a reserve of tapes and DVDs assigned for language class homework. But there are other ways to find movies representing other languages and cultures.

  1. The UF Library has a growing collection of DVDs of foreign films. You can use the catalogue to search for a particular title or director, or try the advanced search to look only among the videos.
  2. The Reitz Union Cinema on campus is cheap and sometimes shows foreign films.
  3. The HIPPODROME CINEMA is Gainesville's best venue for foreign (and also independent American) films. Check the listings for films from all over the world. A new film usually starts on Friday and shows twice a day (except Mondays), with extra shows on Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday afternoons. The cinema is in the Hippodrome Theater in downtown Gainesville (25 SE 2ND PLACE 375-4477).
  4. Gainesville's various other movie theaters a>often have Spanish and occasionally other foreign-language films.
  5. The Sarasota Film Festival is an annual (Jan-Feb) international film festival which gives ticketholders a chance to see new films of all kinds.
