Astronomy
The "first light" opening ceremony of the Gran Telescopio Canarias in Spain’s Canary Islands was the subject of an Associated Press story July 16. UF is the only U.S. institution with a stake in the massive telescope.
Criminology, Law and Society
An annual survey by UF criminologist Richard Hollinger and the National Retail Federation about retail theft was cited in a July 11 Associated Press story about Wal-Mart's decision to lower the age at which it recommends stores prosecute first-time shoplifters to 16 from 18. The survey was also featured in Forbes, in a piece on how to prevent shoplifting.
English
Faculty aren't the only individuals at UF snagging headlines. English Ph.D. student Angelique Nixon is the author of a three-part series on racial identity in the Nassau Guardian. As a graduate student at UF, Nixon is specializing in postcolonial studies and Caribbean and African literatures with a certificate in women's studies.
Geography
UF geographer Stephen Golant was quoted in a July 14 Chicago Tribune story about the trend of Florida's senior citizens moving back to their original states because of frail health, poor finances or death of a spouse.
Corene Matyas, an assistant professor of geography, was quoted in a June 21 United Press International wire story about her research into new tools to predict inland rainfall caused by hurricanes. The story was the result of a news release.
Political Science
Political science professor Ken Wald was quoted in a June 22 Associated Press international wire story about the role of Barack Obama's church -- the United Church of Christ -- in his campaign.
Religion
Vasudha Narayanan, a Distinguished Professor of Religion and Director of the UF Center for the Study of Hindu Traditions, was quoted in the New York Times on July 21 discussing how American Hindu parents teach their religious traditions to their American-born children.
