Sheila Dickison Biography
CLAS Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
Sheila Dickison earned her bachelors degree from the University of Toronto in 1964 and her masters and PhD in Latin and Greek (1972) from Bryn Mawr College. After spending two years at the American Academy in Rome she taught at Wellesley College from 1969-76 and then joined the Classics Department at UF in 1976. From 1989-95 she served as Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
In 1996 she became Director of the University Honors Program, a position she held until 2007. From 1999-2007 she also served as an Associate Provost. Under her administration, the honors program grew to provide a wealth of information and resources for students. During her tenure as director, Dr. Dickison oversaw the opening of the Honors Residential College at Hume Hall in 2002, development of a comprehensive prestigious scholarships support and guidance program for students, development and administration of the Lombardi Scholarship Program, implementation of a database for research opportunities called the Undergraduate Research Database, and numerous other programs and initiatives to enhance the experience of all students on campus. She has received a number of awards for her support of students, including the Mort Wolfson Award and the Blue Key Distinguished Faculty Award, and faculty, including the Association for Academic Women Achievement Award.
Dickison has also been actively involved in service activities relating to the teaching of Latin and the classics. From 1998-2002 she served as president of the American Classical League, an organization of over 4000 teachers of classics at all levels. She has also provided substantial service to the Advanced Program Latin Program, having served as chair of the Latin Exam Development Committee and chief reader for this national exam. She also serves as a consultant to the National Latin Exam.
Dickison’s research focuses on the area of ancient social history, historiography and Latin pedagogy. She is the author of several text books and many articles.
