Lecture Series - 2005

"Coffins, Jars, and Tombs: Prehistoric Burial in East and Southeast Asia"

This half-day symposium will explore prehistoric burial ritual in East and Southeast Asia. Four lectures will be presented, –setting the scene” and case studies from recent archaeological research in Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan. Emphasis will be placed on prehistoric mortuary practice, material culture, and ritual context. Examples drawn from sites in Mainland East and Southeast Asia and Island Southeast Asia will be placed in broader regional context to highlight similarities and differences of the human experience with respect to mortuary ritual behavior. Formal presentations will be followed by open discussion.
