2005 Summer Institute at UF

July 10-22nd, 2005

Follow-up: April 22nd, 2006, Terrace Room, Norman Hall, from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Seminar to be lead by Dr. Joseph Murphy.

Affiliated with the Columbia University NCTA Coordinating Site.

Benefits for Participants Instruction by experts in Asian Studies

  • $100 upon completion of eight seminar sessions and submission of an implementation plan
  • $200 upon completion of a follow-up session during the 2005-06 academic year
  • $200 in seminar materials
  • Instructional materials worth $300 on Asia for the schools library
  • Opportunity to compete for study tours to China, Japan, and Korea
  • Course credit or re-certification credit (where applicable)

Participant Commitment

  • 30-hour seminar to take place over two weeks in East Asian history, geography, literature, and culture with colleagues and Asian specialists

    Group interaction and discussion are essential to the success of the Seminar. Therefore, attendance is required, but exceptions can be made with notice. If you will need to miss a session, you are not automatically declined admission, so please apply. No more than two seminars may be missed to remain a participant, and no more than one unexcused session or we will need to end your participation.
  • Completion of an implementation plan for incorporating seminar content and materials into teaching
  • Implement appropriate content and materials from the seminar into courses and share acquired knowledge, skills. And materials with colleagues
  • Participation in follow-up meetings to share experiences in integrating Asian Studies into the curriculum
  • Assist in the evaluation of the NCTA

Applying for the Seminar

  • Who?
    Open to middle and high school teachers engaged or interested in incorporating Asia into their curriculum
  • Cost? The teacher/school participating is only responsible for transportation, university housing will be provided for the two weeks, there is no registration fee.
  • Where?
    All eight sessions will be held at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, FL
  • When?
    July10-22nd, 2005.
  • How?
    Send the included Application Form along with a one-page resume, letter of interest, and a letter of recommendation from your administrator to:

New teachers/pre-service are welcomed to apply. If you do not yet have a school that you are working at, admittance will be contingent upon securing applicable employment. Letters of recommendation should come from an administrator you have worked under, or faculty mentor. Once employment is secured, we will require a letter of support from the administrator at your new school.
