Q: Who is eligible to apply?

A: Only current and past participants in the Florida Seminar for Teaching on Asia are eligible to participate in the study tour.

Q: How many participants will be selected?

A: 15-20 teachers will be selected to participate, plus tour leaders.

Q: Who will be leading the tour?

A: Elinore Fresh and Susan Kubota, two faculty with the Asian Studies Program and AALL. Their information can be found on the faculty and staff page.

Q: Will I need a Visa?

A: Yes, but it will be arranged through the travel agent, you will not need to do this yourself.

Q: Will I need a passport?

A: Yes. As it can take varying amounts of time to obtain a passport, we suggest doing so as soon as possible. We will need a copy of the first page of your passport and/or verification that you have applied for one when we obtain a Visa for the group.

Q: Where is the study tour going?

A: China and Japan. The exact itinerary is in the process of being finalized.

Q: Do I need to enter and exit the countries along with the study tour?

A: No. If you decide to extend your trip either before or after the study tour, you will be responsible for the additional period of time you will need a Visa in China. Additionally, we cannot pay for any extension to your trip. If you will not be arriving and departing Asia along with the group, we do need to know as soon as you make this decision in order to make flight and Visa arrangements. You do need to stay with the tour for the duration of the trip, no coming late, leaving early, or taking a few days out during the tour.

Q: Do I need any vaccinations?

A: No. If you are concerned, or are interested, please contact the Center for Disease Control http://www.cdc.gov/travel/eastasia.htm

Q: Will we be visiting Chinese and/or Japanese schools?

A: We are in the process of trying to make the arrangements. The finalized itinerary as well as area visits are not known for sure at this time.

Q: How much will the study tour cost?

A: The study tour will be a total of $500 for each participant, payable in two installments. The tour is heavily subsidized by the Freeman Foundation, the funding organization of the National Consortium for Teaching on Asia. Please see the application information for the participant contribution schedule.

Q: What is the study tour schedule and when will it depart?

A: The study tour dates are not yet finalized, but should depart during the week of June 14 - 20, 2004, to last an estimated three weeks. The departure date is to be finalized shortly.

Q: Will we be back in the U.S. before the July 4th holiday?

A: No.

Q: What are the physical requirements of the study tour?

A: The itinerary for this study tour is physically demanding. The group will travel in northern and southern China and Japan, staying an average of three to five days in each city. There will be a great deal of walking. Temperatures can reach as high as 100 degrees in some places. Participants will often be responsible for carrying their own luggage, in some cases up several flights of stairs. If you have any questions about your own physical condition for participating in this program, we strongly recommend that you check with your physician as soon as possible. For those who are not used to regular exercise or a rigorous physical regimen, now is the time to start getting yourself in shape!

Q: Can I fax or email any part of the application to the office?

A: No. Due to the amount of paperwork entailed as well as bookkeeping, it is necessary that you mail your application, in triplicate, to our office. Email and fax applications will not be accepted.
