NCTA NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES FOR FALL 2005
The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) is planning a series of exhibit booths, presentations, and informational receptions in conjunction with professional conferences this fall. NCTA offers seminars, materials, and study tour opportunities to enhance teaching about Asia in precollegiate geography, literature, and social studies courses. These activities at professional conferences afford teachers an opportunity to learn about NCTA seminars and network with those who conduct the seminars as well as seminar alumni.
NATIONAL COUNCIL for GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATION (NCGE)
October 13-14, 2005 | Birmingham, Alabama
NCTA will host an exhibit booth (#16) on Thursday, October 13, and Friday, October 14, during the annual meeting of the National Council for Geographic Education at the Sheraton Birmingham (AL) Hotel/ Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. Also, on Friday, October 14, NCTA will host a coffee break from 9:45-10:15 a.m. in the exhibit hall. Following the coffee break, at 11:00 a.m., Lynn Parisi, Mimi Stephens, Theresa Noonan, and Linda Wojtan will present Teaching about East Asia: Focus on Resources. Additionally, NCTA will contribute East Asia-focused curriculum units for the door prize drawing.
NATIONAL COUNCIL for the SOCIAL STUDIES (NCSS)
November 18-20, 2005 | Kansas City, Missouri
During the annual conference of the National Council for the Social Studies, NCTA will host an exhibit booth (#255) in the International Alley section of the exhibit hall at the Kansas City (MO) Convention Center on Friday, November 18, and Saturday, November 19. Also, NCTA will contribute East Asia-focused curriculum units for the door prize drawing. In addition, during the conference, NCTA staff, seminar leaders, and seminar alumni will conduct the following sessions on East Asia:

• Time TBA -- Ritual and Religion: Using Baseball and Sumo as Lenses into Japanese Culture, by Alex Droege and Meredith Melzer
Saturday, Nov. 19

NATIONAL COUNCIL of TEACHERS of ENGLISH (NCTE)
November 18-20, 2005 | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
During the annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English, NCTA will host an exhibit booth (#125) on Friday, November 18; Saturday, November 19; and Sunday, November 20; at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. On Saturday, November 19, Diana Wood, Joan Reteshka, and Lisa Pupo will present Improving Student Literacy through Asian Eyes from 11:00 AM-12:15 PM. Later, from 4:15-5:30 PM, Kathy Woods Masalski, Blanche Milligan, and Marilyn Day will present a session entitled, Voices of Asian Women in Literature: Do Your Students Hear Them? In addition, NCTA will host an informational reception in the Somerset Room at the Pittsburgh Westin Convention Center Hotel from 5:30 to 7:30 PM on Saturday, November 19.
