2007-2008 Seminar
This 8-month seminar will give middle and high school teachers an overview of Asian history, culture, politics, and art. Participants will produce a lesson plan for use in their classrooms, and learn how to implement Asia into their varied curricula. Benefits for teachers include college credit or in-service points, honoraria, and funding for library materials.
Applications will be accepted until September 1st, 2007.
Seminar Details
- The academic year institute takes place over 8 months, one Saturday per month. The dates are: Sept. 22, Oct. 20, Nov. 10, Dec. 8, Jan. 19, Feb. 16, Mar. 22, and Apr. 19. Participants explore East Asian history, geography, literature, and culture, and are taught by specialists in the field.
Group interaction and discussion are essential to the success of the seminar. Therefore, attendance is required, but exceptions can be made with notice. No more than two seminars may be missed to remain a participant, and no more than one unexcused session.
- With the assistance of instructors and colleagues, teachers will develop a lesson plan that incorporates seminar content and materials into the regular curriculum.
- Approximately nine months after the seminar, teachers will participate in a follow-up session to share their experiences with integrating Asian Studies into the curriculum.
- Seminar participants become part of the NCTA alumni community, and are welcome to participate in all outreach programs sponsored by the UF Asian Studies Program. Teachers are invited to talks, films, and other events that will be organized by the Asian Studies Program.
- We are in the process of finalizing the syllabus for the academic year 2007-2008 seminar. If you would like to see an example of a prior syllabus, please look at the schedule for the academic year 2005-2006.
Benefits of Participation
- Instruction by experts in the field of Asian Studies. The summer institute is led by Dr. Joseph Murphy, interim director of the Asian Studies Program, and other guest speakers will also visit the class.
- $300 upon completion of eight seminar sessions and submission of an implementation plan.
- $200 upon completion of a follow-up session during the 2007-2008 academic year.
- $200 in seminar materials.
- Instructional materials worth $300 on Asia for the school's library.
- Opportunity to apply for study tours to China, Japan, and Korea.
- Course credit or re-certification credit (where applicable).
Applying for the Seminar
- The Florida Seminar for Teaching about Asia is open to middle and high school teachers engaged or interested in incorporating Asia into their curriculum. Past participants have been from the fields of language arts, social studies, art, history, and more.
- Applicants should submit the following materials: the Application Form , a one-page resume, a letter of interest, and a letter of recommendation from your administrator. Please mail your application by September 1st, 2007 to:

New teachers/pre-service are welcomed to apply. If you do not yet have a school that you are working at, admittance will be contingent upon securing applicable employment. Letters of recommendation should come from an administrator you have worked under, or faculty mentor. Once employment is secured, we will require a letter of support from the administrator at your new school.
